The only true defence against the second law of thermodynamics is absolute, unblinking vigilance.

One cannot multitask. One must sit beside the mug in total stillness, watching the delicate plumes of steam abate, waiting for that fleeting, glorious micro-moment when thermal aggression yields to drinkability.

I took a sip at ten twenty-two. It was, as expected, completely cold. I swallowed it anyway, stared at the grey sky above the garden, and quietly switched the kettle back on.
